The inspiring sustainability programme at Sylvia Park is also teaching local school children to build a love for nature.
Thanks to a strong vision and a passion to give back to their community, Sylvia Park has created a meaningful, measurable and long-term sustainability programme. At Outside In, we’re proud to guide them on this journey. The first two years have already seen us compost over 11 tonnes of food waste and two tonnes of green waste.
Outside In has designed a sustainability programme that builds value for the client and its community.
The Sylvia Park retail precinct is nestled between residential and industrial zones in Mt Wellington, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Our vision for this project is to maximise the sustainability opportunities for the 210,000sqm site and transform it into a ‘green corridor.’ This builds value for the client and its community. The programme includes creating a flourishing community garden at Sylvia Park. It’s used as a teaching tool for children from the local school. Outside In leads the students in hands-on sessions to build an appreciation of nature and where food comes from. Known as the ‘Eco Warriors,’ the children enjoy the opportunity so much that there is higher school attendance on their days in the garden.

The on-site composting scheme at Sylvia Park turns much of the food waste from its food tenancies into compost. A great compost needs green waste. Our Outside In exterior experts collect that when maintaining Sylvia Park’s beautiful and biodiverse commercial interiors and exteriors. The fully circular composting scheme minimises the amount of waste transported off the site. The harvested compost nourishes the site's soil, reducing fertiliser needs. We use organic principles to care for the garden with the Eco Warriors. The children can share their harvested produce with their families. This award-winning project was included as a case study at the 2024 World Green Infrastructure Congress.
