Outside In created an atrium garden which emulates nature by changing with the seasons.
Our inspiration for the greenery design of Rawhiti Estate came from a traditional wintergarden – a conservatory devoted to the cultivation of winter-blooming plants. The many bespoke elements in this atrium garden include cosy seated areas, set into the planter beds. Nature can be admired and enjoyed by residents with ease.
The beauty of this atrium garden is a key drawcard for those considering living at Rawhiti Estate.
The design of the greenspaces for this boutique later living project in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland prioritises people. The expansive, fully accessible atrium garden was developed through our collaboration with the Ministry of Architecture + Interiors. By applying biophilic design, it provides health and wellbeing benefits to residents. Inviting seated areas surround residents with nature. Those unable to physically experience the space enjoy views of the wintergarden from the comfort of their apartment room. Six huge moss and plant walls grace the sides of the atrium. The quality and beauty of this space is one of the key reasons many residents have chosen to live at Rawhiti Estate.

The garden was created to be easily reconfigured so the space can be rearranged for events and functions. To achieve this, our Outside In team custom-designed and manufactured movable planter beds. To create further interaction and make the garden a destination for residents, we created in-built and ergonomic seating within the planters – complete with matching coffee tables. Outside In designed telescopic lights that sit in the planter beds. These encourage the growth and beauty of light-loving flowering species. The result is an impressive nature-filled space where the interaction between plants and people is promoted and celebrated. The benefits of integrating plants into design are clear to see.
